Here’s the start of measuring my intake of media daily and weekly. My name is Kenzie Taylor and I have a passion for history and especially how humans change and evolve through history. Recently I’ve been excessively interactive with not only my social media accounts but with reading audio books as well.

To expound – About a year ago I took a class called, Cross-culture human and family development. The kind professor in my class worked hard to teach about the many social problems going on with different minorities in our country. I often try to share this knowledge on social media, which does not sound the greatest but let me expound. I have always wanted to study minorities, specifically u.s. minorities. I have been apart of research groups to collect and analyze the amount of research done already on minorities in this country (and the low amounts of it would make you motivated too, trust me). This has not only motivated me to become an advocate for those that need support but I also feel a strong need to share what I have learned to my friends and family. So I have taken it upon myself to read the books; White Fragility, Just Mercy, The Hate you Give and so many more (side note – I could talk to anyone for days about these books). I have felt the need to call out bigotry remarks and help people understand the toxic ideas of individualism but also how we could all do better to understand how racism has developed itself over time. Because of my heightened intake of social media and reading books, I calculated my media intake at 120 hrs a week. I didn’t speak up in class because I was certain I calculated it wrong. But I wasn’t. I get it though, I’m probably the only person that went through 3 audio books last week and also have normalized watching movies while I accomplish any other task.

I look forward to analyzing my social media intake and see the positive effects that I imagine will come from taking a step back for more than just a few days.

  1. Mckenzie, I think your approach to using media as a tool to become more informed and a tool to inform others is a great use of your time. 120 hours may seem like a lot of media intake time for one week, but I think absorbing relevant information so that you can become a more aware and informed citizen is awesome.

  2. Hi Mckenzie! I think it is so cool that you have such an interest for History! I have actually heard the the Cross culture human and family development class is amazing and I hope I get to take it sometime in my career at BYU. Props to you for spending so much time researching this topic and becoming motivated to advocate for those minority groups. I think its awesome that you have committed yourself to taking the necessary steps to make our world a better place to live! PS- I loved the movie Just Mercy so I'm sure the book is even better!!

  3. This is awesome! You should really share all of the stuff you have learned from the books. It's super important to learn and to constantly remember.
